Construction plans for the new addition are moving forward.

Within the next few years enrollment is expected to reach 2,800 students at RHS.  The new wing will take the place all 18 portables except for the reassignment room portable (RAC).  In addition, the cafeteria will be enlarged.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Principal Dr. Marlene Hammerle said. “It’s going to be great to have instead of students having to go out to the portables for classes. It’s going to be great that they’re going to actually have a classroom to go to.”

The construction will begin during summer 2012 and is expected to be completed by fall 2013. The cafeteria will be renovated into one flat level instead of the current three levels during the summer before students arrive. It will also expand northward and toward the student parking lot. The 28 new classrooms will include two new art rooms and five science classes/labs. New teachers will be hired and most of the current floating teachers will receive their own room.

“All of the construction will be outside the building,” head of science department Mr. Bradley Britt said. “So all of the (current) classrooms will (remain) open (during construction).”

The project architect recently toured currently facilities and met with several teachers to determine room needs.

The budget is approximately $7 million, funded by the bond election initially designated for a new high school.  Project contractors were hired less than a month ago.

Sachse and North Garland High Schools will also have some major renovation projects.
