After 39 years in education, Dr. Marlene Hammerle is retiring from her position as RHS principal. Hammerle has been principal of Rowlett High since it’s opening in 1996 and has remained its only principal.

“I always wanted to be an educator,” Dr. Hammerle said. “I’ll miss being the boss. I was the oldest of five girls so I’ve always been the head of things.”

When she was younger, Hammerle was positively influenced by a math teacher and decided to become one. Being a math teacher was satisfactory for her, but eventually, she was asked to become an administrator of a middle school. Initially, she was put off by the idea, but soon came around and took the job as assistant principal and then principal of Lyles Middle School.

Then, in 1996 she helped open RHS.

“I want my legacy to be that I cared about the kids,” Dr. Hammerle said. “It’s all about the kids.”

Hammerle’s goal through out her entire career has been to make a difference with youth. She said that when RHS became a recognized school, it was a major accomplishment for a 5A high school. Since then she has strived to make sure Rowlett continues to be outstanding in education year after year.

Along with that, she wants students to know that even with all the rules and procedures, there should be fun. She hopes the fun and educational excellency will continue even after she has left.

“If I kept going one more year, I’d eventually be walking across that stage with a walker,” Dr. Hammerle said. “Leif (her grandson) is graduating, and Steve (her husband) and I want to do some things together. It’s time.”

Dr. Hammerle, with her husband, plans to travel during the new found free time this fall. They will visit Portland and Seattle. Future travel also includes Canada, Hawaii, and the East coast to “see the leaves change colors.”

“It’s going to be a big job for the district to pick the new principals,” Dr. Hammerle said. “I’m glad I’m not the one making this decision.”

The new principal will be announced before the end of the year. Dr. Hammerle hopes to introduce the student body and staff to the incoming principal.

As for advice to the new principal, Dr. Hammerle advises that he or she doesn’t “change anything that doesn’t need to be changed” and “don’t rock the boat.”

Roughly 150 students experience disciplinary issues every week. The number one reason is hall sweeps. The administration notes that during certain times of the year the lack of discipline among students fluctuates in a somewhat predictable pattern.

“Students get most stressed during the daylight savings time and around final exams every year,” Assistant Principal Mr. Leday said.

This year all paper methods of discipline tracking were replaced with a new, more efficient method. It’s a computer program called RTI that allows teachers to fill out discipline referrals electronically. The new program affects Mrs. Goehl and Mrs. Pace, the AP’s administrative team, most of all. It is their job to keep up with referrals and student files.

“At the beginning, I didn’t like it, but anything that’s new you have to get used to,” Mrs. Goehl said. “The more I use it, the more I’m familiar on where I need to go for disciplinary (records) on a particular student.”

According to Mr. Leday, there are some drawbacks.

“It’s interesting because the ease of it before was being able to see how many discipline sheets you had and now you can’t. But it’s quicker and more efficient,” Mr. Leday said. “Substitutes can’t use the program, it’s only for registered teachers.”

“The Hunger Games” was a great movie to watch. The movie had fantastic plot to it and the setting was very well put together. The movie in itself was a very good movie. It had a lot of special effects that actually intertwined with what was going on at the exact time, like you always knew something was going to happen and when it was going to happen.

The main character in the movie was Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence). She ends up taking her young sister’s place in the Games, and hopes she will come out on top as kids fight to the death.

The film was very well directed and had the right actors to play each part. The whole plot of the story was very easy to follow and you knew what exactly was going on the entire time.

The only thing that was kind of irritating was the audience. There were a lot of people who knew what was going to happen and when and it ruined the intensity that was building up.

I recommend this to everybody because it really is a great movie. If the book was good, then the movie gave it justice!

“The Hunger Games” is the film version to Suzanne Collins popular book series, set in a near future of what once was the U.S. It is the nation of Panem, with a capitol head and 12 districts.

The transition from book to movie was not without flaws. The film was well held together by the leading role Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss), who portrayed the girl hardened by suffering, who doesn’t seem to have room for humanity. Lenny Kravitz (Cinna) also made the trusting relationship with Katniss believable. He played the role of her friend in the capitol, without skipping a beat. Josh Hutcherson was also convincing in his role of Peeta. The differences from the Capitol and districts were displayed well, as was the differences within the districts. Woody Harrelson (Haymitch) was also convincing in his role of the only mentor of District 12 and alcoholic.

The movie was changed from a first person view to a third person view. The movie was easier to follow for those who didn’t read the books because of this. Although, this might have upset die-hard fans.

Some cast member choices were not as strong, like Liam Hemsworth (Gale), who came off weak next to Jennifer Lawrence. Gary Ross also failed to direct it with mastery. Thankfully, he is not directing the next movie. The camera angles and choice of shaking the camera whenever action started in the movie did not play well. It distracted from what was the action itself.

Hopefully for “Catching Fire” there will be some casting revisions and the new director not ask the camera crew to the amateur thing and shake the camera every time the main character is attacked.

The show “Everybody loves Raymond” is a comedy that shows how family sticks together and gets through the smallest problems of everyday life. It is really funny and keeps you entertained.

In one recent episode, Debra Barone (Patricia Heaton), who is the wife has a box of things from her ex-boyfriends and tells Raymond (Ray Romano) that it’s just for memory. This is a little problem between the two, but they figure out a way to get through it.

Any age group can find this show interesting. It keeps your attention on the show so you can see the way things end. Each character is someone you can relate someone in your life to and that’s what makes it so funny; you can picture your family going through that particular situation. The ending always seems true and realistic and every episode ends well.

There are not any weaknesses that I can tell, only the fact that it’s over pretty fast. Overall, I recommend this show to everyone who feels in the mood to laugh and have a great family TV show to watch. “Everybody Loves Raymond” airs on channel 66 at 10:00 p.m. Wednesdays.

Directed by Gary Ross, “The Hunger Games” has stayed number one in the box office for four weeks straight. And the highly anticipated movie has not disappointed its fans.

In “The Hunger Games,” a seventeen year old girl, Katniss Everdeen, is faced with decisions that have life or death consequences. She lives in a post-America world where one city controls twelve districts and forces them to sacrifice two children each year to a game where you must kill to survive. Not only has this blood bath taken place for 74 years, but it has been recorded as a television show and broadcast as mandatory viewing for the entire nation of Panem. Katniss is pulled into the games and finds herself conflicted when her fellow tribute, Peeta, and her must team up in a game that must only end with one.

Katniss is not Jennifer Lawrence’s first big role. She was also in “X-Men: First Class.” Her companion in the story, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) was in numerous movies too, including “Bridge To Terebithia” and “The Vampire’s Assistant.” The fan bases for these two actors alone are big enough to promise viewers for “The Hunger Games”, not to mention Channing Tatum and other big names in the industry who were involved in this film. The actors fan bases’ aren’t the only things drawing people to the theaters. “The Hunger Games” is part of a highly praised trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. The pressure put on producers and Gary Ross to keep the movie true to the plot and flavor Collins created was clear after the production of the movie was announced.

The movie follows the book very closely, only taking out one large chunk that doesn’t affect the plot much at all. “The Hunger Games” portrays the strange wonders of the Capitol well, giving fans exactly what they want and fulfilling the images they had imagined of Panem. This is a movie for the bookworm and the film buff. Everyone will enjoy the action-packed romance “The Hunger Games” has brought to us.

“Wrath of the Titans” had as much flair and action as the first in the series of “Clash of the Titans.” In fact, it was so much like the first, they should have called it “Clash of the Titans 2.”

Perseus (Sam Worthington) has to save his father, Zeus (Liam Neeson) from Hades (Ralph Fiennes) and Ares (Edgar Ramirez) as they try to release Kronos from his prison.

With all of the action and occasional romance, it has a good storyline and the actors are great, but it doesn’t seem to compare to the first. With Perseus having to save the human race again and being the main hero, it seems the moves are on repeat.

Like many other sequels, “Wrath of the Titans” is a disappointment compared to the first. If you want to see “Wrath of the Titans,” I suggest you rent it when it comes out in a few months.

My overall impression of the movie “Bridge to Terabithia” is that it is a good children’s story that can teach adults a few lessons, too. The ending may be a bit rough for very young children, but all-in-all it shows good morals and life lesson values.

The story includes mature themes about being alone, love, child/parent relationships, class differences, and death. For example, in the movie, a financially doubted father is extremely uninvolved with his son, Jess Aarons, while the mother is too overwhelmed with five kids to connect to any of them including her daughter, Leslie Burke. At school, kids are made fun of because of their appearance, and a bully and her friends pick on the younger kids.

In my opinion, the movie has excellent effects. The realistic creatures and settings they put in the movie make it that much easier to connect to. The way the movie is played out, you truly get in the characters’ heads and feel and see what they do.

The characters were perfect for the film. Leslie was distant, and then learned to connect to Jess. They needed each other in life and the movie portrayed that very well. You felt the pureness of their friendship throughout the entire movie.

I believe the movie is a great choice for movie night. It is okay for all ages, but some very young children or even just extremely sensitive people may be harshly affected by the death of a lead character. If you haven’t seen this movie, get it on DVD just about anywhere that sells movies.

My overall impression on “Up” the movie is that it is a great movie for all ages. This movie has so much to it. It has action, comedy, and tears waiting to be shed. By the end of the movie, you will want to go on an adventure.

Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner) and his wife Ellie had a shared dream since childhood, to visit exotic Paradise Falls in South America. After Ellie dies, Carl decides to make his wife’s dream come true and unveils hundreds of balloons to fly his house to Paradise Falls. A young Wildlife Explorer scout named Russell (Justin Nagai) happens to be on the porch when the house starts to float. When they get there, it becomes a whole different story. First they run into a giant bird who Russel calls “Snipe”. Next they run into a little dog named Doug (Bob Peterson). When Carl meets the famous Charles Muntz(Christopher Plummer), a famous explorer. He starts to get a vibe that Charles isn’t as nice as he thought.

The aspect of animation plays greatly upon the movie. Animation lets characters that you wouldn’t see anywhere but on the big screen real. In the movie, you get a sense of imagination. It makes you feel like you are in a dream and that the characters were made by you. In my opinion, if the movie was made with real actors, I don’t think I would get as much out of it.

The movie keeps you engaged with all of the problems that start to arise. The sequence that everything happened was perfect. When I watched it, I didn’t get lost like other movies. In my opinio,n I felt a great flow in the movie.

“Up” is a great movie for all ages and will be having you want to go on an adventure.

“Cloverfield” was an amazing movie if your stomach can handle the fast motion, and you like thrilling, sci-fi, monster movies. The movie was great for a science monster lover as me. The special effects were amazing. There is no end to the destruction of the city and all the military fighting an action movie can handle.

When New York is attacked by a monster, Rob (Michael Stahl-David) is at a party to celebrate a new job in Japan. The monster ‘spawns’ smaller creatures, that attack places where the big monster cannot enter. Meanwhile, Hud (T.J. Miller) is holding the camera which you (the audience) are watching through. Rob eventually gets a call from Beth (Odette Yustman) asking for help because she is stuck in her apartment. You watch Rob and his friends run through the city to get to Beth, and to get out of the city before the monster kills them.

Other cast members include Jason Hawkins (Mike Vogel), Lily Ford (Jessica Lucas), Marlena Diamond (Lilly Caplan), Travis (Ben Feldman), and Staff Sgt. Pryce (Billy Brown).

The movie is supposed to be filmed on a hand-held camera, like a Flip, so all the movements are really fast and not very smooth. This effect adds realism to the movie. It also shows how the characters interact with the camera and each other.

“Cloverfield” was directed by Matt Reeves (who also directed “Let Me In”, “Conviction”, and “Miracles”). The producers are J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk. Abrams is also famous for movies like “Super 8”, “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”, and “Star Trek”.

The movie to me is a must-own movie. The movie may cause nausea, and might make you throw up because of the fast movements.
