“Hairspray,” the musical, will be presented by the RHS theater department Jan. 27-30. The cost for the show will be $10.
Theater Director Brandon Tijerina said that picking this year’s play was “easy.”
“Hairspray is a really fun show and has a really great story to tell,” he said. “My favorite scene or I guess song would be ‘Can’t Stop the Beat.’ It’s really upbeat and makes me feel good after I hear it.”
The cast was picked in early November and quickly started rehearsing. Auditions were open to all students.
Sophomore Dane Sowers, who is playing Link Larken, said he’s excited and looking forward to the challenge.
“I’m usually nervous before I get on stage. Then when I’m on, my mind goes blank,” Sowers said. “I focus only on what’s going on around me. I look for hints or things the others are doing and it helps me remember my lines.”
Leading lady junior Meghan Bailey, playing Tracy Turnblad, also likes this challenging opportunity.
“I’ve been obsessed with music since middle school,” she said “I love it all. Acting is the real challenge though. I’m really nervous but also really excited. I’m excited to work with all these amazing people. I get a lot of support from everyone.”
More than 100 students and faculty are working to make this musical the best it can be.
“I want it to be sold out every night,” Mr. Tijerina said. “An auditorium screaming with people; that would be really cool.”
